Our firm was founded by sisters, Sheila Aiken and Michele Aiken, who have extensive backgrounds in the corporate employment law and benefits environment, including working through all types of employment matters and designing and working with benefits plans of all types.

 

 

In the employment law arena, we have experience in:

  • Auditing business practices and procedures
  • Drafting and amending various employment law mandated policies and procedures – FMLA, ADA, ADEA, COBRA
  • Evaluating employee claims of employment discrimination
  • Employee life cycle issues (hiring, evaluating, disciplining and terminating both “for cause” and reductions in force)
  • Providing materials and/or training for managers/supervisors on various employment law issues – sexual harassment, discrimination, performance management
  • In the employee benefits law arena, we have experience in:

  • Designing various retirement plans – profit sharing, 401(k)
  • Designing employee incentive programs
  • Drafting and amending non-qualified deferred compensation plans
  • Negotiating severance packages
  • Drafting summary plan descriptions
  • Providing legal opinions and counsel on various unique benefits related situations
  • Creating training and informational presentations on various employee benefits issues
  • Sheila Aiken

    Sheila received her J.D. from the John Marshall Law School.  She also received her L.L.M. in Employee Benefits from them where she graduated with honors.  The John Marshall Law School is the only law school in the United States that offers an L.L.M. program in Employee Benefits. 

    Prior to becoming an attorney, Sheila spent over ten years working for Fortune 500 companies as a human resources manager with both domestic and global responsibilities.  With this diverse background, Sheila is able to understand her client’s needs from their perspective.  She has experience developing creative solutions for unique, complex employee situations within the boundaries of the law. 


    Michele Aiken

    Michele received her J.D. from the John Marshall Law School.  She also received her L.L.M. in Employee Benefits from them.  The John Marshall Law School is the only law school in the United States that offers an L.L.M. program in Employee Benefits. 

    Before becoming an attorney, Michele worked for both mid-sized and Fortune 500 companies in the areas of benefits and risk management.  In addition to her J.D. and L.L.M., Michele holds her Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) designation from the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.  Her background makes Michele uniquely qualified to identify and analyze areas of possible concern for businesses, then develop and implement solutions and strategies that meet the goals and objectives of the business.
